Botanical ramblings:  broad-leaved Stonecrop

(Sedum spathufolium)

by Linda Cooley

This pretty little ground cover is a common sight to kayakers in Skagit and Island counties where it clings to outcrops, cliffs and coastal bluffs. In fully exposed lean sea cliff soils and crevices, its older leaves become brilliant red contrasting against the soft grey new growth.

In nutrient-rich soils with ample water and part shade, the leaves retain a soft sage-green color. Bright yellow clusters of flat topped flowers appear on the stems from early May to mid-June.
